Understanding Warmth & Insulation RatingsUpdated 2 months ago

HOW WARM IS THIS JACKET?
We understand it can be tricky to compare warmth levels — especially when you're gearing up for snow, alpine adventures, or cold-weather travel.

At Helly Hansen, we don’t assign a numeric “warmth rating” to each jacket because warmth is subjective. Your personal comfort will depend on:

  • Your own body temperature

  • Activity level (e.g. skiing vs. walking)

  • Weather conditions (wind, humidity, layering)

Instead, we focus on technical layering systems and the insulation technologies used in each garment.

START HERE – LAYERING AND BASELAYERS
What you wear under your outerwear matters just as much as the jacket itself.

OUR INSULATION TECHNOLOGIES

LIFALOFT™ (LIFA® + PrimaLoft®)
A revolutionary lightweight insulation developed with PrimaLoft®. It uses LIFA® fibres for reduced fibre density and increased thermal efficiency.

  • Feel lighter, stay warmer

  • Found in: Insulated ski jackets, hybrid midlayers

H2Flow™ Temperature Regulation
This system controls body temperature by trapping warm air in insulation channels and allowing ventilation zips to cool you down.

  • Keeps you warm without overheating

  • Found in: Technical ski and alpine jackets

 PrimaLoft® Synthetic Insulation
Industry-leading insulation offering warmth even when wet. Used across midlayers and ski jackets.

  • Soft, compressible, and highly breathable

  • Often blended with LIFA® for added performance

NEED A WARMTH COMPARISON?
Because insulation type and outer shell technology vary, we recommend:

Checking the product description for insulation type and intended use
Looking at customer reviews on the product page
Contacting our team — we're happy to recommend the right piece based on your climate or trip
